Breast Augmentation

Although the female breast does not define a woman’s innate feminine nature, for some, it is still a symbol of motherhood, nurturing and feminine sexuality. Especially those who never developed during adolescence or, those who lost their breast volume after pregnancy or breast feeding (lactation). Sometimes, there are those who simply yearn having womanly breasts. Breast augmentation is a procedure aimed to provide improvement in body image and thus increase self esteem. Breast augmentation is among the most common cosmetic procedures performed in the United States every year. For those who were born with small sized breasts or those whose breast became deflated, a breast augmentation can benefit them by making them feel more proportional.

About the procedure

The most common way to achieve a breast augmentation is by Introducing an implant under the breast tissue or behind the chest muscle. Breast implants come in many sizes and there are many different types available. Currently this is the most reliable way to obtain a definitive size change.

The breast implant can be introduced through a small incision in various parts of the body, such as the bottom of the breast, around the nipple, in the under arm, or in the belly button. Every now and then the breast may also benefit from a breast lift (link) in addition to breast augmentation, if the nipples are located lower on the breast. Below you will find before and after pictures of patients who underwent breast augmentation. Make sure to read the picture comments as each patient’s requests are different and unique.

What to expect during a Breast Augmentation consultation

During your consultation for a breast augmentation, you will initially meet with a medical assistant who will review the paperwork you fill out containing a full medical history. This is important information that will be used to determine whether you are a good operative candidate. Next, you will be able to discuss your observations and goals with Dr. Cocco, who will in turn give you an honest opinion and help you understand your options. This initial meeting should treated as a two-way interview. It is just as important that you agree and understand the recommendations given to you, as Dr. Cocco must feel she understands your expectations and is confident she can help you achieve your goals. Once a full understanding between doctor and patient is reached, a proposal will be generated and the decision to proceed with surgery will be made jointly.

What to expect after breast augmentation surgery

Everybody heals differently. Rest assured, the aftercare will be personally directed by Dr. Cocco. There will be a series of postoperative appointments scheduled for the following year and it is important that you follow all instructions for optimal healing. Even though the results will be immediately appreciated, it takes time for the implants to settle at their final position after all swelling has subsided and the process of scaring in the skin to fully mature. Sometimes special bras or garments are used to help guide the way the tissues heal. We are happy to walk you through the process and look forward to meeting you in consultation.
